Facebook was created at Harvard in 2004 exclusively for students. In September 2006, it became available to anyone with an email address. As a result, over the past year Facebook has increased in popularity so that more than 7 million Canadians have joined out of more than 62 million active users worldwide [1]. For many, Facebook has become a primary tool to contact friends, share information, and build communities around common interests and events. There have also been significant changes to Facebook during this time such as Facebook Mobile (access on mobile phone), Facebook Platform (developer applications), and most recently Facebook Pages (create business or brand sites).
Although 68% of Facebook users log in daily, it can be said that there is a lack of understanding on how best to use Facebook to protect one’s privacy while still benefiting from its social and networking possibilities. Facebook 101 will provide a hands-on workshop on Facebook to familiarise everyone with the site and its functionality. For example, what are preventative measures that one can take to avoid potential embarrassment? How can you change your relationship status without informing your friends through the News Feed? The objective of this session will be to share personal and group knowledge on Facebook, outline strategies to minimise the sharing of personal information, and provide participants with ways to enhance productivity through Facebook.
